The Issue

As an enthusiastic cuber who closely follows the happenings in the World Cube Association (WCA), I am deeply concerned about the recent decision shared on WCA's website. This change threatens the very essence of competitions and the inclusivity that has been built over the years.

The 2-pad method has been a standard in WCA competitions, allowing a wide range of participants to engage without any additional complexity or equipment. This straightforward approach is particularly beneficial for newcomers and younger competitors, fostering their skills and love for cubing. It's common knowledge that change can often bring improvement, but this move seems to favor unnecessary complexity at the cost of accessibility.

The switch to 4-pad solves could impose additional constraints on both competitors and event organizers. It necessitates extra equipment, higher costs, and could prolong the duration of competitions due to having to position your hands, rather than just simply putting your hands on the timer as we are all used to. This makes solves less efficient and way less enjoyable. This could dissuade new talent from entering the community, hinder event organization, and, ultimately, decrease participation.

Moreover, the 2-pad system has been effective and widely accepted by the community, as evident by the smooth and successful conduct of numerous competitions around the world. Transitioning to a 4-pad solve does not seem to offer a significant improvement in fairness or accuracy, thus making such a shift seem more about complicating processes than enhancing competition quality.

For the enjoyment, practicality, and growth of the cubing community, it is imperative to maintain the current 2-pad solving system in WCA competitions. Let's preserve the accessibility and enjoyment that have made cubing events so special. Please sign this petition to support keeping the 2-pad solve tradition alive in WCA competitions! Together, we can ensure that cubing remains a welcoming and feasible hobby for all enthusiasts.
