The Issue

This is in regards of the recent Hello Counselor episode that has been deleted as of the making of this petition. The segment entailed of a father who acts more like a spoilt brat than an actual adult and mistreats his wife and children. But the standout story is when the father blatantly admitted to essentially molesting his five year old son named Jeonghyeon, I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong), with his justifications being, "It's okay, because I'm his dad," which is just so messed up on so many levels. You could see that Jeonghyeon was clearly uncomfortable with being on camera, would hide himself in his father's jumper and would hit his father when he was talking about how "pale" his penis was.

It was clear that the father truly was oblivious to what he was doing and so I definitely believe he needs to be educated on why what he's doing is wrong, BUT this does not mean he shouldn't be held accountable for his actions. I especially believe this due to the fact that there is a child's wellbeing at stake here. There are so many cases of children growing up after experiencing sexual abuse as a child and experiencing PTSD and trust issues as a result, and I really don't want Jeonghyeon to join them, and that's why we still need to be harsh on the father, no matter what his intentions were.

There is also the fact that the panelists and the audience were just laughing it off and making it out to be some sort of joke, however, such is the case for Hello Counselor. Despite its premise (which I actually think is quite interesting), the way it's executed is extremely inappropriate. The show focuses more on comedy and entertainment rather than actually trying to help the people on the show. There have been many a time where people on the show will have really serious stories that just get brushed off like they're nothing.

This says more about the state of Korea as it's clear that it's handling of mental health is very, very bad, to say the very least. It treats them like they are taboo topics and so when people do come out with these very concerning stories, the panel of comedians will slap some useless solution such as, "Listen to your parents more!" or "Try to understand where s/he's coming from!" and it just doesn't help. If anything, it would make the recipient feel even worse about their situation.

I'm making this position because I believe Hello Counselor NEEDS a change. And it needs it NOW.

I believe this show either need to get cancelled completely (which is what a lot of people are advocating for), or needs a complete rebranding where, instead of focusing on comedy and entertainment, it actually relates to the title in that they bring proper counsellors, therapists, pyschiatrists and so on to move the show on and give the guests some actual good advice, as well as educate the audience on situations and states of mind that they would, otherwise, be ignorant of. They can even keep the whole 'celebrity guest' aspect of it if they really want!

I advise you to use the following emails to at least try and get KBS to do something about this:

  • english@kbs.co.kr
  • info@kbs-america.com
  • intl@kbs.co.kr

I want justice for Jeonghyeon but I also think we need to think about this show as a whole, as it is not an isolated incident. There have been many a time where there's an episode with a concerning story which gets pushed aside for shits and giggles, and I've had enough of it. If you've had enough too, please sign this.
