Apology from the state of Alabama to Anthony Ray Hinton

Apology from the state of Alabama to Anthony Ray Hinton
The Issue
Anthony Ray Hinton is a man that was put on death row for a murder which he did not commit. With the help of Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative, Hinton was released after spending 30 years on death row in an Alabama prison. Indisputably, this was an incident of blatant racism and disregard for the life of a black man, which exemplifies the inherent discrimination of America’s criminal justice system. Thirty years were taken from an innocent man’s life, and he uses his story in order to effect change in the criminal justice system and prison industrial complex. The Black Student Union, and our non-black allies, of St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut have been deeply touched by his story and activism. It is for these reasons that we demand a formal apology from the state of Alabama for the emotional and psychological trauma that Anthony Ray Hinton must struggle with everyday as a result of his unjust imprisonment. We ask that you join us in helping Mr. Hinton get the respect that he deserves, and the apology that is long overdue. #OwnUpAlabama
