DISCLAIMER! This information has been written and created with the approval of Bubba’s parents and his advocate.

Luis (Bubba) Salinas is a Sophomore at Jordan High School and a member of the Marching Band, who also happens to have Autism. Katy ISD has unfairly stated that he should not receive his fine art credit for participating in band, solely because he “does not meet grade-level expectations…” due to his disability. Katy ISD, band is about so much more than that. Band is about making the choice to be in an environment that prioritizes sharing art with an audience, no matter what that art may look like. Music is art. Bubba makes art. Just because his music, his art, and his motivation to be a member of the band may look or sound different compared to other students, that does not make him any less worthy of a fine art credit.

Bubba Salinas actively participates in all marching rehearsals, football games, and competitions. He shows up and works hard alongside the rest of the band. His energy and light are great motivations for the rest of his peers, and the JHS Band program would NOT be the same without his participation.

Katy ISD, Bubba Salinas is equally important to the band as anyone else. He has worked, earned, and dedicated the time for a fine art credit. His passion to create music with the band is an inspiring lesson that should be honored. A high school fine art credit only scratches the surface of how important his influence in the musical world is.

I hope, and the people who have signed hope, that you will recognize this passion and reward Bubba Salinas with the fine art credit he so rightfully earned. At the end of the day, band is a family. We are all connected by our passion for music and how we can communicate with that music. Bubba Salinas is more than capable of communicating through music, he creates it. He feels it. We all do, and we all want him to receive the credit he has worked incredibly hard to earn.
