School off on Eid

School off on Eid
The Issue
With Islam being the worlds 2nd largest practiced religion, it’s only fair that we get a school day off for our religious holidays. Sometimes Eid will fall on a weekday and some students are forced to go to school so they can stay on top of their work. So far Muslims don’t have a single day off for any of our religious holidays while Christians have 2 weeks off for Christmas and a day off for Good Friday. It’s not fair to Muslims that we only have christian holidays off (while we don’t even celebrate it) and not one of our most important religious holidays. The point of this petition is to get students the well deserved day off and although according to my knowledge, muslims are still excused from coming to school due to this holiday, the students that miss that day still have to go back to school and make up all the missing assignments from the day they were gone. If everyone in KISD is given a off day for this holiday, then we won’t have to be under the stress of making up the work. It also gives non-muslims an opportunity to recognize this day as an important holiday. Because the Islamic calendar does not always match up with the Gregorian calendar that KatyISD normally uses, Eid is almost always on a different day of the month. KatyISD could research the Islamic calendar annually and find out the exact date Eid is going to be and give students off district wide.
