“What I wish is that [Disney] had been more accepting of [George Lucas’s] guidance and advice. Because he had an outline for [Episodes] seven, eight, and nine. And it is vastly different to what they have done.” – Mark Hamill In light of the backlash against The Last Jedi, general displeasure with the direction of the Sequel Trilogy, and the amazing success of Henry Walsh’s petition to have Disney strike Episode VIII from the official canon (nearly 96,000 supporters), I’ve decided to re-open the petition I started two years ago, to have George Lucas’s Sequel Trilogy produced into animated films. Henry Walsh, to his credit, has acknowledged that the goal of his petition is not achievable. I couldn’t agree more. Disney is not going to delay the production of Episode IX in order to remake Episode VIII, no matter how many people sign a petition… However, I believe the goal of this petition is achievable. I knew when I started it that alternate live-action films would be no more realistic an ask than that of Walsh’s petition. That is, the only way we could possibly see George Lucas’s Sequel Trilogy as “filmed” entertainment is if the stories are produced as animated movies (like the Clone Wars series). When Episode IX is released, and the Sequel Trilogy is complete, Disney will no longer have any reason to withhold the stories proposed by George Lucas. The only question is: in what form will they be revealed? I don’t want to find out what Lucas’s stories were by reading a brief synopsis in a book, or online, or hearing about them in a DVD extra… I want to see those films. This petition is meant only to convince Disney/Lucasfilm that it would be worth the cost of production to make those films – that there’s an audience that wants to see them. If that audience is large enough, they’ll have no reason to deny us. So, if you want to see George Lucas’s Sequel Trilogy, I ask you to do something very simple and easy: Get at least one person, who also wants to see the films, to sign this petition, and ask that person to do the same … and ask that person to do the same … and so on… I know that there are millions of people out there who have great respect and appreciation for George Lucas’s legacy, and want to see Disney honor it. If we reach those people, it will happen. Thank you, The People for George Lucas
