Fox Pictures: Take down the X-Men: Apocalypse ad that promotes violence against women.

The Issue

The choice of this image to market X-Men: Apocalypse is grossly problematic. There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film

In X-Men: Apocalypse, the X-Men team is led by Mystique, the first time a woman is at the forefront of any Marvel team on film. That’s awesome and exciting. In addition to being intelligent and cunning, Mystique is also a formidable fighter, and can get past groups of over 50 soldiers without a weapon.

The use of the scene in the trailer, which the image is taken from, makes sense. However, in an ad without context it portrays a dangerous and undesirable message, and is a visual embodiment of rape culture. It is also an inappropriate image for kids to be exposed to in such a public way.

Perhaps the intention is to stir controversy with this poster in which you have a power struggle on display between Oscar Issac as the film’s villain Apocalypse and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

Mutant politics and superpowers aside, what we actually have here is a naked woman being choked by a man three times her size. That is what people who know nothing about the movie see when they look at this ad.

This is an irresponsible error on Fox’s part and they need to own up to it.

We want Fox to stop using the ad immediately.
