R Karab started this petition to Mayor of Atlanta Kasim Reed and

I live near T.I.'s strip club, VLive Atlanta. V Live has a digital, scrolling sign out front that reads: "Fully nude GIRLS." I would like to ask T.I. and the club's management to please consider changing the word "girls" on the sign to the word "women" because we do not have to agree on how we personally feel about various gendered words to agree that in the specific context of adult entertainment, using the word "girls" is wrong; it is entirely unnecessary since we have good alternatives, and we know and want better for ourselves than to convey a harmful message that furthers a violent epidemic.

"Girls" is ambiguous; "women" is not

Essentially, this is a square-rectangle situation: "girls" can mean both female children and adult females, but because "women" cannot describe a group of kids, it would not be horrible and shocking to see "nude women" on a sign every day. "Nude girls" is necessarily ambiguous though, and that the context is adult entertainment in the first place does not eliminate the messaging ambiguity; it works to assign a higher duty.

Sexual exploitation of children is a growing epidemic

Marquees communicate literal, basic information like event, date, and time, and updating VLive's to "nude WOMEN" would clarify a message with huge implications. Tabitha's House, a non-profit that provides resources to victims of sex trafficking, reports that "7,200 men purchase sex from a minor every month in Georgia. (The Shapiro Group, 2010)" Just Georgia. In just one month. According to data published eight years ago. But sexual exploitation of children has grown since then. In July 2018, the PBS NewsHour reported that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) got over 213,000 tips about child pornography from Internet providers in 2010 and MORE THAN 10 MILLION IN 2017!!!! Let all of those numbers soak in while you meet some national offenders here: https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/cac

We can chose to reject harmful, violent messaging

We make small but important changes all the time to move ourselves closer to our personal and shared aspirations. And maybe one less child will be exploited or one less predator will feel emboldened if we deliberately choose not to use words in sexual contexts that could also refer to children.

As a society, we have to be truly mortified that we keep claiming to hate child abusers while still seeming to partially accept them by allowing messaging that aligns with their violence to persist. 45 does enough of this exact type of hypocritical garbage for all of us, and it is disgusting and exhausting and has real-world consequences. We know that words DO matter, and we can prove our devotion to that awareness today, right now, in our own community.

So please consider changing one word on your digital sign. I do not know how difficult that is to do or what the process looks like, so I apologize if this is a bigger ask than I realize. If it is expensive, I would be glad to help fundraise to try to offset the cost to your business.

I hope you will please believe that I am really not trying to be a jerk or a bad neighbor to anyone. I care about this cause and sincerely want to try to work on it with anyone who is interested and willing to. Thank you for your consideration and time.
