CAMPAIGN UPDATE! FIRST 24 MONKEYS HAVE ARRIVED!

Our Swedish Partner, Djurrättsalliansen has received news that, on 13th November, 24 Rhesus macaques arrived at at the Astrid Fagræus Laboratory (AFL) for Karolinska Institutet researchers to begin experimentation. 10 of the monkeys are female, and 14 male. As we predicted, they arrived into Sweden from the United States, via the notorious monkey dealer, Hartelust. They were born between January and June 2013 with two exceptions; one female monkey was born in July 2012, and a male was born in January 2012. We do not yet know where these monkeys were born, less than four years ago, but as they are captive-bred, they would likely have been born onto a breeding farm or in a laboratory. These animals have never experienced freedom, and they are unlikely ever to. Our evidence is growing and we know, from the CITES permit (issued on 9th October 2015) - an essential document for the trade in any CITES-listed species - that Karolinska Institutet plans to import a total of 120 monkeys for cruel and futile malaria experiments. All will be exported from the United States. We also now know that a further 90 macaques are languishing at AFL, and are obtaining further information about the fate of these individuals. The science is stacked against the use of primates for research, particularly with the recent news that came from the United States, that chimpanzees are finally being liberated from laboratories and the science community admits they are unsuitable ‘models’ for research into human diseases.
