SAY YES TO THE SALE OF RAW MILK IN BRONKHORSTSPRUIT SOUTH AFRICA

The Issue

The Tshwane Municipality is trying to enforce the legislation of prohibiting the sale of raw milk (unpasteurised) to the public. (Government Notice R1555 of 21 Nov 1997)

The residents of Bronkhorstspruit have been drinking unpasteurised milk for many years.  It is bought from tested dairies in the area. Many people who cannot afford fridges get a good source of protein because if the raw unpasteurised milk gets thick it becomes sour milk, which is tasty and considered a national diet.  Pasteurised milk becomes putrid and has to be thrown away or consumers will get ill from it.

The raw milk sold is a full cream product that does not have any cream taken off or any other ingredients added to it.  It is as nature intended it to be.  Pure, rich, creamy and full of health benefits.  It is also more affordable than pasteurised milk.

Our herd is tested annually for Brucellosis (CA) and Tuberculosis (TB) and the Department of Veterinary Services collects a sample of milk from the shop tanks every month to test for Brucellosis.  Our herd was sourced from dairy farms that were also CA and TB free.

We do not use hormones to increase milk production and antibiotics are only used if and when necessary.  When used, the cow is milked last and the milk discarded.

If the sale of raw milk is stopped a number of businesses and farms will have to close down and many jobs will be lost as well as a good affordable source of nutrition for many of the population.

As per the government legislation there are a number of areas in South Africa that are allowed to sell raw milk, and so we are requesting that Bronkhorstspruit be included in the list of areas allowed to sell raw milk.
