Feminine Hygiene Products Should be Provided Free at Kapiolani Community College
The Issue
Constant public and student need makes availability of menstrual products an issue we should address in every bathroom every day. Menstruation is a fact of life, and a significant percentage of our College population is impacted by this issue. If toilet paper and paper towels are provided for free in campus restrooms, we believe that feminine hygiene products should also be provided to all students free of charge. Even if products are currently available on campus in health centers or faculty offices, there is little to no awareness. Further, limited hours of office or health staff makes current supplies of menstrual products inadequate to meet needs of students in night or weekend classes. We also have a weekly farmers market on campus and a large percentage of the public could also benefit from having these materials provided free. Our campus and administration can be leaders and encourage dialogue on this private issue which should be a matter of public conversation, as it impacts all of us as women and children of women. We do not think that socio-economic need is the reason to provide these products; rather we want to promote openness, availability, and acceptance of menstruation and the products women need because of it.
