Kansas: Ensure every case of child abuse is reported—no more silence in our schools

The Issue

As parents, we trust schools to keep our children safe.

But that trust was broken in Leavenworth, Kansas—where three school district employees have been charged with failing to report suspected child abuse, despite being mandatory reporters under state law.

This follows disturbing charges against a former elementary teacher accused of sexual misconduct. But what’s worse is that some school leaders may have known—and didn’t report it.

In Kansas, the law is clear: educators and school staff are required to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect. No one should look the other way. No one should stay silent.

We are calling on Kansas Department of Education and state leadership to work directly with school districts statewide to reinforce mandatory reporting training and protocols

Kansas lawmakers -- to ensure that mandatory reporting laws are being enforced—and that staff are trained and supported to speak up.

If we want to protect children, we must make sure no abuse is ever ignored again. Teachers and school staff need clear expectations, real accountability, and the confidence to act without hesitation.

Please sign if you believe every adult in a school should do everything in their power to protect the children in their care—and report abuse the moment they suspect it.
