The school of Kamiah, home of the Kubs, is being taken part in a petition to change Kubs to Cubs, but for what reason? Opposing petitioners believe it's meant to be taken in an acronym for the Ku Klux Klan, in short the KKK. The school has used phrases such as "Kamiah Kubs" "Kub Kountry", but NEVER "Kamiah Kub Kountry"!! Kamiah High School, home of the Kubs, has been home to many generations of families. My parents went to school here, my friend's parents participated in school here, and I attend school here. In my younger middle school years, I played volleyball and basketball as a Kub and have never felt any problem or even have had a thought to the problem that Kubs is spelt with a K. Kamiah is a very diverse school system with equal opportunities while students, even if not of the white race, have felt very much at home. The school of Kamiah participates in many cultural activites that are given and presented by the Nez Perce Tribe. As a Nez Perce and Spokane Indian, I've always felt at home attending Kamiah High School, and have never been degraded or separated due to racial issues EVER. Now my question is, why choose to make a problem out of our mascot now? After years of being known as the Kamiah Kubs, what was the motive to try and rip this tradition from the community? The "K" in Kubs is a representation of the town of Kamiah we live. Kubs has always been the name we've stuck with, and because the "K could represent as an acronym for the KKK" we should be forced to change it? Again, not anywhere in the school do I see "Kamiah Kub Kountry" written anywhere that shows we are the school of KKK. As a student who has spent my life in Kamiah as a Kub with a K, I will NOT stand for this. If my name were to be Karen Klyde, should I be forced to change it because "it is an acronym for the KKK"... NO! Then why are we doing it to the Kamiah Kubs. Kamiah is definitely not a school with a racist past, present, or future. I am a firm believer in tradition and the Kubs are tradition, and that is something we shouldn't be forced to change. They are attempting to change something that has never been a problem years and years before? The school system is fair and equal, as they should be. If we truly want to make a difference in a cultural sense, do it by teaching the younger children in grade school about our tribal heritage, have a language class, do more mini powwows, rather than spreading drama and hate to the community about a letter of the alphabet. Kamiah is a place with loads of tradition and pride for the small town. We should embrace the Kubs tradition. If we can get this much attention on a racial accusation, why couldn't we have passed a levy? Stand with me Kubs! Go Kubs with a K!!
