The Great Lawn along Kalanianiole Highway is designated as preservation land under the East Honolulu Sustainble Communities Plan.  It should remain this way for several reasons. First, the Great Lawn provides a beautiful introduction to our valley. Converting it to a strip mall would be an eyesore and diminish the beauty of Hawaii Kai. Second, a strip mall would exacerbate the already congested traffic situation along this stretch of highway. Third, Hawaii Kai has unused retail space available (especially in Kalama Valley) so there is no need for further development. Fourth, converting preservation land into a strip mall is inconsistent with the East Honolulu Sustainable Communities Plan.
