WATER RIGHTS RALLY, TUESDAY APRIL 26
Kahului, Maui – A water rights rally is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26 at 7am – 10am in front of Alexander & Baldwin’s (A&B) company office. The rally is in conjunction with an O‘ahu Rally scheduled at the same time in front of A&B offices Stakeholder Meeting. The rally events are in response to legislative measure HB2501 wherein political persuasion has appeared to have assisted in authoring a bill attempting to negate a Jan 8th Circuit Court ruling contending that continued issuing of temporary permit for East Maui water diversion, is illegal.
Organizers request that automobile traffic be aware of potentially large number of people on sidewalk near A&B Maui office building. Pedestrians will be walking along Pu‘unene Ave and Ka‘ahumanu Avenue between 7am and 10am.
Rally participants are reminded to bring refillable water containers; hats and sunscreen. A designated monitor will be on location ensuring traffic regulations are enforced.
The past week have littered local news headlines with attempts by the sugar cane conglomerate to make right of several wrongs. First announced was their plan to finally conduct an Environmental Impact Statement, thirteen years later than required. The next public relations move was an announcement that 8 streams would be returned water. Opponents and petitioners express intense lack of trust and feel the recent actions taken is merely a method to sugar coat their real intent to continue their hold on over a century long illegal diversion through HB2501.
Updates regarding the rally can be found on facebook page East Maui Water.
