Get rid off Hegerty Maths booklets in Twynham School
The Issue
Hegarty Maths is great. It is a fantastic learning tool and I, along with a lot of other students that I have spoken to, prefer it (and find it much more useful) to ordinary homework. The website is clear to use and easy to understand. It makes revising and learning incredibly easy.
However, the homework booklet does none of this. The booklet (or sheet of paper, depending on your teacher) is supposed to be used by students as a "revision tool", but what I struggle to understand is how it makes a useful revision tool? Sure, you can argue that it might be easier to quickly look back in the booklet for notes, but really, you are going to find far more detailed and helpful descriptions and explanations on the website itself. The booklet adds an extra 30 minutes of work per Heraty Maths task (which every student in the school gets two off a week), which can be used to revise other subjects or do other homework.
All this booklet does (for me, and lot's of other students I have spoken to), is add unnecessary stress to the task. This task causes students to, subconsciously, take in less of the information displayed to them on Hegarty Maths and there are multiple studies which prove the points that I am making here.
In conclusion, it is clear that these booklets should not be forced upon students as homework (maybe they could be set as an extension?). As mentioned before, it adds unnecessary stress to the task and causes students not to take in as much information as they would do without the booklet and to have to complete it creates a much more negative mindset towards the topic than they otherwise would do.
