Urgent Emergency Appeal for Sudan – Flood Disaster
Urgent Emergency Appeal for Sudan – Flood Disaster
The Issue
We, the Sudanese Canadian Communities and groups in Canada, writing to you, for an urgent, time-sensitive regarding the ongoing flood disaster in Sudan, and kindly seeking your immediate assistance and support. The extreme torrential rains has brought record-breaking floods to Sudan, killing over 120 people, injuring 46, destroying 87,633 homes, damging 87,301 homes and more than 829, 670 people have been affected or displaced. The unprecedented damages caused by record flooding, has swept away poorly constructed highways, neighborhoods with poor water drainage systems, roads and bridges; affecting hundred thousands of people.
Currently people are in an urgent need for relief and rehabilitation. The Transitional Government of Sudan and NOGs aid agencies are facing huge challenges to cope with the disaster, as some neighborhoods along the River Nile have been entirely destroyed and cut off. Local efforts in providing public evacuation centers through stadiums, halls, and mosques are in immediate need for logistics. Floodwaters may overrun and flood ancient archaeological sites in the country, including the three-thousand-year-old Meroitic Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Homes and community buildings have been badly damaged and destroyed leaving many in desperate need of shelter. Some have lost all of their previous possessions and have been left facing the prospect of starting over again from scratch. Hygiene and sanitary levels have plummeted due to flooded latrines and contaminated water supplies, preventing people from exercising necessary COVID19 prevention measures such as regular handwashing. Some health facilities have been damaged, hampering their abilities to treat patients should transmission of COVID19 or other viruses and diseases increase.
In an inner-connected world we can't insulate ourselves from the mother nature’s disasters and tragedies currently unfolding in Sudan. Sudanese communities and friends in diaspora are coming together to raise funds to help people affected by floods. Considering the facts, Canada is one of the front-line leaders in the international community, standing up for human rights and humanitarian aid, we count on the Government of Canada to provide immediate funds to help disaster relief efforts and the flood victims in Sudan, as well as providing:
• Clean water and emergency sanitation
• Urgent food needs
• Shelters
• Emergency medical supplies
We, the Sudanese-Canadians have strong family ties in Sudan, and have been anxiously following the news about floods disaster on daily basis, and eager to help our loved ones. We are seeking for help, relief and support for our brothers and sisters in Sudan from the Canadian government in any possible way- any technical aid, financial aid, medicines, food supplies or anything you could do to save our people.
