Stop Peel Police Discrimination against Skin Colour and Religion
The Issue
On 23rd of April, at approximately 04:15 pm, my elder brother Muhammad Adnan and I were hanging out 5 blocks down from our street on Quiet Creek Dr. We were smoking cigarettes in our car. As we started driving back to our house, a peel region officer pulled us over by parking her car directly in front of us while our car was still moving. She stepped out of her car while maintaining one hand on her gun in her holster. She asked us for our IDs. I took my ID out while my brother said he forget his at home.
Then the officer said, ”No. You know what, step out of the car. Both of you". She asked, “Do you still want my ID before I step out?" She said, “Yes. Sure”. After giving her my ID, she looked down at my ID and saw my name, Muhammad. Right after looking at my name, she told us to sit down on the road. We did as we were asked. She proceeded to tell us that she wanted us to be honest and asked if we are sex offenders, pedophiles or kidnappers. She said that she received a call from a lady that said these two guys are lurking our kids.
After we sat down on the road, she told us now she is going to search our car for "weapons or anything a kidnapper would carry”. This included my gym bag. My brother and I were totally shocked at this point. We sat on the road. People who passed by stared. I have never felt so humiliated in my life before.
After failing to prove us guilty in every unethical way possible, the cop came and said, "I still have to run you guys in my system to see if you guys are sex offenders.” She kept stressing the words sex offenders and kidnappers even though I told her, “We have kids at home so why would we do anything that you are accusing us of?" She proceeded to say, “Do you?” This accusatory tone made me feel degraded. I felt I was being treated with contempt and disrespect. She commented on my brother's appearance. She commented on his teeth being too yellow. She accused him of doing drugs. She judged us by our looks. After she ran my ID, she came to us and said, “Just don't come to this street ever again! Because we will keep coming!" We felt very threatened by this statement and felt stripped off of our liberty. When she was leaving she said, “Wow, you are probably wondering what just happened.” She laughed deliberately and this further left us shocked and disturbed. My brother and I felt extremely harassed! I personally felt that the cop was racist, discriminating and too aggressive; we felt bullied. Cops are supposed to make us feel secure and this incident left the opposite impression.
