Pass Bill S-214: Stop the Cruelty
The Issue
Needles, knives, burns, hives, rashes, and scratches; what does this sound like to you? To me it sounds like horror movie full of torture and pain. In reality, that is what animals have to endure on a daily basis. In North America, there are no bans on animal testing for cosmetic purposes. Which means, animals have to be poked, scratched, burned and tortured so that we can benefit from the products it produces. As stated by Suzi who runs a blog based on cruelty free cosmetics, in all of the makeup companies in the world, a total of 87 companies are cruelty free (2016). This is quite a large number, but it is definitely not large enough. Most of the makeup brands that are sold at Shoppers Drug Mart, a very common pharmacy across Canada, are not cruelty free. Canada must change the way they do things before this continues for another 50 decades. Animal testing is an inhumane act and has been advocated for in many countries and with that in mind, Canada should become a part of the movement.
In the summer of 2015, Bill S-214 was brought to attention by Sen. Carolyn Stewart Olsen to help Canada join the cruelty free movement. Bill S-214 would “prohibit cosmetic animal testing in Canada as well as the sale of cosmetic products or ingredients that have been newly animal tested elsewhere in the world” (Humane Society International, 2015). Unfortunately, the bill was not passed so there is still much to do. This bill should become a law because animals have been treated poorly for much too long.
