Why this petition matters

Vitamin D3 deficiency is quickly being revealed in many international, peer-reviewed studies as a major health risk for contracting and dying from Covid 19. In Spain, The first randomized controlled trial has now proven that Vitamin D3 ( as Calcifediol ) treatment reduced the need for ICU admission in hospitalized patients.(1)  Scientists and doctors around the world are pleading with governments to provide adequate doses of Vitamin D3 supplementation and testing to its citizens. Adequate Vitamin D3 doses can cost pennies a day.

Yet in Canada, the maximum dose available without a prescription is 1000 IU daily, which has now been proven to be inadequate to raise immunity against Covid 19 in Vitamin D3 deficient people (extremely common).

As we venture into Canadian Winter 2020/21, and the sunlight that naturally produces Vitamin D3 within our unprotected skin fades away, supplementation is essential. Food sources of Vitamin D3 are largely from animal sources which are also increasingly deficient in Vitamin D3 due to agricultural practices of raising animals indoors.

In many other countries, doses of 2000 IU and 5000 IU are easily available over the counter and inexpensive ( USA, EU, UK, Australia), but Canadians are required to consult their doctor, ask for a prescription and have it filled at much greater expense for a compounded product together with a dispensing fee from the pharmacy? This makes what could be very cheap, prohibitively expensive for most people. Further, testing for Vitamin D3 levels is not provided for within medical service plans in Canada, unlike most other countries.

Aside from Covid 19, the health benefits of correcting Vitamin D3 deficiency has repeatedly been shown in countless peer-reviewed studies of diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, pneumonia, influenza, depression, multiple sclerosis, and pregnancy.

The safety record of a daily dose of Vitamin D3 5000 IU for adults is undisputed in many peer-reviewed studies and should be made easily available to Canadians now. Interestingly, this dose was available OTC in Canada until 10 years ago but was banned by Health Canada for no given reason. At a minimum lift the restriction immediately for Canadians to buy from international sources.
