Make Chaining Dogs Outdoors Illegal In Canada

The Issue

Dog owners have a legal duty to ensure their pet’s welfare needs are met.
Yet there are still dogs being tied outdoors and neglected of their health and well-being. If we feel cold, they do too.

Dogs that are tethered outside are neglected of companionship, exercise, likely of adequate food and water, shelter, warmth/cooling, interactions with people and other animals, and protection from pain, suffering, injury, and disease. These dogs are in distress and need your help.

Canada faces extremely harsh weather conditions each year. Winter temperatures often drop to -30 degrees Celsius and animals are left in the blistering cold bound by a leash with no where to run to for warmth. They are forced to endure cold rains, snow, hail, strong winds, storms, and are still left there on scorching days. Many times the water bowl freezes over and the area the dog is kept in is extremely filthy where the dog may be forced to sleep in its own feces and urine.

It is important to urge that pets should be provided with adequate food, water, and shelter. Many large or old dogs are tied to posts in the yard without shelter, forced to face unbearable conditions. With the new law banning tethering animals in place, we can attain a safer environment, reduce the spread of disease, and prevent the tragedy these tormented lives.

Chained dogs encourage unsafe communities for the owners, neighbors, and other wildlife around. Children play outdoors and are in danger of a dog who has been isolated for long periods of time in harsh conditions. The mental health of the dog is at risk as a result of the trauma and neglect, increasing the risk of the dog attacking a person.

In April 2005, a 4 year old was was killed after approaching a chained dog in Virginia. If tethering animals causes torture to the animals themselves and a great risk to those around them, why is it still allowed to be practiced in Canada?

Let's put an end to this cruel and inhumane act in Canada and open our homes to these loving animals. We cannot allow them to suffer any longer; the time for change is NOW. Dogs are social animals that need love and attention. Every being should have the right to freedom.

If you cannot take on the responsibility of a pet owner, please do not waste these lives and cause unnecessary pain and suffering. Allow other people to adopt them who are willing to provide proper shelter and care for these beings.

Please sign this petition to urge Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, to reconsider laws in Canada in accordance to animal rights by banning tethering animals.

A chained dog is a choked soul.
