Impose a Horse Passport System to Prevent International Slaughter

The Issue

The video posted is an operating slaughterhouse in San Bernabe, Mexico, where many horses from the United States are sent to be slaughtered. **WARNING: the video is EXTREMELY graphic and not for the weak of stomach or faint of heart. This video was used because it displays the absolute cruelty the horses endure which is neither sanitary, nor humane. It is used to open eyes to the horrors of the kill pen. In 2010, the United States passed a bill proposing that the slaughter of horses is illegal, and therefore all known slaughterhouses were discontinued. Since then, the horse slaughter industry is still going strong in unregulated slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, where the horses from the US are being transported to for profit. They endure a horrible, crowded, and long journey, making their inevitable deaths slow and painful, not to mention inhumane. Horses have been a part of the United States culture for hundreds of years, and world culture for thousands. The disrespect towards these creatures is disgusting and immoral. The proposed topic in which you will sign will instill an equine passport system, where the horses who cross the border to and from the US will require a vet check for equine-related diseases, and make sure horses are not being transported for slaughter. Thus, the horse slaughter of US equines will be prohibited, not only in the United States, but in Canada and Mexico as well.
