We, the wives, daughters, mothers, son's and friends of loved one's living in long-term care facilities are so warmed by your comments of encouragement or the sharing of your stories. We don't feel so alone in this. Thank you for sharing YOUR voices. A big shout-out from us to you in gratitude for your comments, support and help!
Our voices are few and we need help to make all our voices heard.
Five months after the public health emergency was declared, many family members are still being denied Essential Visitor access to their loved ones even though provincial health policies clearly provide for their right to have that “essential” status, to allow families to be involved in the residents’ care again, as they were before COVID-19.
However, the responsibility for deciding who is an essential visitor is being left in the hands of individual care facilities. They can simply decide a resident’s care needs are being met by staff and deem the family member not essential. This is wrong and a violation of the resident’s rights. No long-term care facility should have the right to remove this access to loving care, oversight, and a legal duty of care for any reason.
Seniors in long-term care are so vulnerable, unable to press a button for help, or call for help. They are unable to call care practices into question or protect themselves. They need family care, oversight and protection.
Please help us keep the momentum of this petition going! Please help us by sharing and spreading the word ... giving us a voice to make seniors in long-term care facilities heard, now and always!
And please keep sharing your comments.
Thank you!
