"We are not the survival of the fittest, we are the survival of the nurtured." psychologist Louis Cozolino
Many of our loved ones currently living in long-term care facilities, especially those with dementia, do not know how to press an emergency call button, or call for help; they need to be cued to hydrate or eat; they need assistance with the small things that make the biggest impact to their quality of life and mental well-being; like hearing aids working, eye glasses put on or cleaned for them to see, music turned on for them to listen to, etc. They cannot protect themselves or call care practices into question. They are completely reliant on the care team to meet their needs and the current care provided in long-term care facilities is not enough! Our loved ones are declining!
Facilities are telling us, the family caregivers and advocates, that 3 direct care hours per day, give or take, meets the care needs of our vulnerable loved ones, that they are fine, and that their rate of decline is normal. We, who were providing care to our loved ones in the long-term care facility pre-Covid are saying; the current care provided is NOT enough and our loved one's rate of decline is NOT normal!
Our family care is 'Essential' and our loved ones have a right to that loving care. It is family that bring the nurture, true love and compassion to their lives and they are still deserving of our love and care during Covid.
