Empower Inuit mothers and reduce the number of foster child placements in Nunavik

Empower Inuit mothers and reduce the number of foster child placements in Nunavik
The Issue
With respect to the many foster care placements of Inuit children in Nunavik under the youth protection act, a safe house in each village would help to keep children in their communities and in some cases, to prevent violence and some suicides. Children are vulnerable, often caught in the middle of conflicts due to overcrowding.
By having a safe house to which children could be sent when tensions arise, the frequent conflicts in families could be prevented at the same time as reducing suicidal intentions of children that sometimes end up with a suicide.
The safe house would be a culturally appropriate preventive action. Overrepresented in Canadian statistics, children are scattered throughout their territory and all over Canada. Currently, Inuit children are taken from their families for reasons of physical abuse, neglect, poverty, sexual abuse and sexual exploitation.
