Signatories will be disappointed to learn that Canada’s Museum of History (formerly the Museum of Civilization where Dr. Sutherland worked as she uncovered the evidence on the Vikings having had contact with the Dorset people 1000 years ago) includes not a word on her discoveries in hosting the Viking exhibition from the Swedish History Museum (http://ottawamagazine.com/going-out/artful-blogger/the-artful-blogger-museum-of-history-skips-canadas-past-in-viking/). There was hope that the recently elected Canadian government might bring about a change in the museum’s treatment of the discovery by Dr. Sutherland (http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/museum-directors-mum-as-government-deadline-passes-for-response-about-reappointments). A copy of the petition and signatures was submitted to the new government on November 6, 2015. An acknowledgement was received from the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada on November 18, confirming that our issue falls under the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, to whom we had also submitted a copy of the petition and who was copied on the above acknowledgement. That hope now appears to be faint, causing concern that Dr. Sutherland’s research will continue to be blocked (http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/heritage-minister-backs-reappointments-of-directors-of-history-nature-museums). If you wish to advise the new Prime Minister of your concern regarding Dr. Sutherland’s unjust treatment at the hands of the Museum and the continued suppression of research important to Canada and the world, his email address is justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca.
