Anita Krajnc has been charged with criminal mischief for offering water to thirsty pigs on their way to slaughter. Anita is coordinator of weekly vigils for Toronto Pig Save (www.TorontoPigSave.org). Activists from the group have been giving water to thirsty pigs for more than two years.

Pigs are crammed by the hundreds into trucks, in extreme heat and extreme cold weather conditions, transported for up to 36 hours without food or water. They are often suffering from dehydration, among other things. In most instances, police have been present, without incident and have helped activists to stop the trucks and said it was ok to give the pigs water.

What is wrong with our legal system, when attempting to alleviate the suffering of another being is seen as criminal, and those who are inflicting the pain and cruelty are left unchallenged?

Anita's act of compassion is not only the right thing to do, but is a duty we all share to help fellow beings who are suffering. Being punished for helping another being in need is outrageous and wrong!

• We ask the Ontario Court of Justice to drop all charges against Anita.
