We wanted to reach out to each and every one of you and say thank you, thank you for calling for a National Day of Mourning. Thank you for signing the petition and raising awareness about the vital need for funding and support for community and residential school survivors as they caretake the 215 lost children at the Kamloops residential school and seek to find answers at the 130 residential schools across Canada.
Residential schools were in place from sea to sea to sea across Canada from 1830 to 1996. The devastating impacts of this genocide is felt by all community and survivors. Raising awareness creates learning that leads to action. In speaking with XiQuelem/Eugene Harry, MÁLEXEȽ Nation, residential school survivor of Kuper Island IRS he asked me to thank you, he said "thank them, because all across Canada is heart broken". He asked that we seek to hold accountable all levels of government to enact the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and that each of us explore the pathways we can take toward reconciliation. We each have a role, no matter how small, to understand the history and legacy of residential schools and the genocide that occurred and continues to impact Indigenous people to this day.
