Bring Russian Sputnik-V Vaccine to Canada
The Issue
CANADA RANKED BEHIND
More than 167 million people have reported COVID-19 cases worldwide, and more than 3.4 million have died. Given the spread of new variants and varying vaccination rates around the world, the effects of the pandemic will be with us for some time to come. And in this grim toll, Canada has endured more than 1.3 million cases and more than 25,000 deaths.
Among advanced countries, this seems like a below-average but not disastrous performance. In 2020, as mentioned in a new study published by the Fraser Institute, COVID-19 cases for every million ranged from a high of 87,000 (Czech Republic) to a low of seven (Taiwan), with Canada (approximately 19,000) ranked 24th out of 35 advanced countries. Deaths for every million ranged from a high of almost 1,800 (Belgium) to 0.3 (Taiwan), with Canada in 22nd place (approximately 500 deaths for every million).
However, on a crucial measure – the “case fatality rate,” or the total deaths from COVID-19 as a percentage of total COVID-19 cases – Canada put forth the seventh-worst performance in the developed world.
The rates of testing remain an important factor, with each additional 100,000 tests for every million associated with 21 fewer COVID-19 deaths for every million. Last year, however, Canada ranked 26th out of 35 advanced economies for COVID-19 tests for every million.
Another important factor was the number of hospital beds for every 1,000, with each additional bed associated with 31.5 fewer COVID-19 deaths for every million. Among 35 advanced countries, hospital beds for every 1,000 ranged from 13.1 (Japan) to 2.2 (Sweden). Canada was near the bottom, at 2.5.
Key deficiencies in Canada’s preparation and response capability combined with low rates of testing, low numbers of hospital beds and an inadequately prepared and protected long-term care sector, have led to a relatively poor pandemic response, particularly on certain measures of mortality.
With global competition for the vaccine, it's important now to use all opportunities to get the vaccine as soon as possible. The government should separate the political issues from obligation to protect Canadians against this pandemic and this virus.
LANCET: RUSSIAN VACCINE SPUTNIK V IS "SAFE AND EFFECTIVE"
One opportunity to speed up vaccination in Canada is to consider the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, as it's happening in Europe.
Under pressure to boost vaccine supplies in the EU, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has announced it will start a review of Russia’s Sputnik V product. At the same time, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Sputnik V vaccine could be used in the EU as long as it received EMA approval.
The Lancet medical journal published peer-reviewed results of interim trials that showed almost 92-per-cent efficacy. It confirmed the vaccine is "safe and effective." At about $10 US each for the two-shot dose, the vaccine is roughly half the price of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and it can be stored at –2 C whereas the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require much-colder temperatures.
Sputnik V has been approved in 42 countries. Austria and the Czech Republic are reportedly considering buying it, and other EU countries may follow as virus variants pick up momentum, making health authorities desperate for new supplies. Slovakia and Hungary recently bypassed the EMA to grant emergency approval for the Sputnik V vaccine.
HUMAN TOLL AND POLITICS
Canadian government should act before it's too late. Concentration on political issues while considering vaccine purchase will cost more deaths of Canadians. It's unacceptable.

Alkarim Remtulla’s father Hassanali, and mother Shahsultan, were in separate hospitals when they passed away. The couple, who had emigrated to Canada 20 years ago from Tanzania, had been married for more than 50 years.
