The Issue

The use of neonicotinoids is one of the largest contributors to the globally alarming rate of dying bees. Neonicotinoids are neuro-toxins used to eliminate crop eating insects and pests. The neonicotinoids are used on plants and crops that bees are responsible for pollenating and often cause defects to crops. Once a bee has come in contact with a plant that has been contaminated by neonicotinoids, the bee experiences difficulty cleaning itself which results in the bee being more prone to disease. Neonicotinoids also cause bees to become lost and/or confused therefore making it extreamly difficult for the bee to find their way back to the hive. If a bee does not return to their hive they will die within a short period of time. If bees are continuously not returning to their hive this results in a shortage of food for the colony, therefore over time the colony will die off as well. Finally, if the bee is able to return to their hive they will continue to contaminate the entire hive through their contaminated pollen supply. If Canada puts a ban on neonicotinoids it will result in safer produce, higher pollenating efficiency, and an increase in the bee population. If neonicotinoids continue to contaminate our bee species they will eventually seize to exist. As Albert Einstein once said, "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."
