Justin Amash: Please Do Not Run for President in 2020
The Issue
Mr. Amash,
As a concerned citizen of the United States of America, I hope this message reaches you. After seeing your recent announcement of an exploratory committee, I wanted to voice my opinion to you. While I respect you as a politician, I do not believe you should seek the Libertarian Party nomination for president of the United States.
While I am ready to support your re-election to the House of Representatives, I believe your candidacy will do more harm than good.
With President Donald Trump in office, we are currently facing an immeasurable threat to our democracy. As we've seen with his handling of the Coronavirus Pandemic, he is unfit for office.
Spoiler candidates are notable for splitting votes with the candidates of the two major parties. Your candidacy has a great chance of handing a second term to Trump. People are frightened to the core at the prospect of Trump winning a second term. Prominent Republican figures like Joe Walsh and Jeff Flake have endorsed Biden because they see removing Trump as a top priority. That is not to say you should endorse Biden, but running a third party campaign will give voters the impression that both candidates are both "the same thing."
While Joe Biden has his flaws, he would not pose the same threat to our democracy that President Trump does on a daily basis.
I have looked up to your bravery when you called for Mr. Trump's impeachment and have donated to your re-election campaign. I will happily support any future campaign of yours, but I urge you not to run for the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Historically, the chances for a third party candidate to win a presidential election are extremely slim. There would be no feasible path to victory if you decide to run.
You are a smart man and an honorable politician. However, our democracy and livelihoods are in grave danger, and we cannot afford a potential spoiler campaign. Please take this message into account.
