Mar 27, 2022 8:00 More than three-fourths of readers who responded to a survey at sanduskyregister.com would support local law enforcement agencies forming a regional Sexual Assault Response Team to coordinate and review sex crimes complaints.
A Sexual Assault Response Team, or SART, as they are known, places highly qualified and trained law enforcement individuals and medical professionals in key positions to process, investigate, review and refer complaints for criminal prosecution or for presentation in front of local grand juries.
Failures handling rape complaints are common and a frequent discussion topic.
- Questions arose again last year when Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost indicted a woman in Ottawa County for allegedly lying about being raped.
- A judge determined the investigation of her by an Ottawa County sheriff's detective was fatally flawed, however, and acquitted her at trial
Yost has not responded to questions about why he sought to prosecute the woman or whether he supports the implementation or use of Sexual Assault Response Teams.
Here are the results of the survey, which was posted at the newspaper's website from March 20-26, 2022:
- Could you support law enforcement agencies forming a regional Sexual Assault Response Team that would coordinate and review sex crimes complaints to assure a quality process and outcome in investigations?
