Defence Costs Should Follow An Acquittal

Defence Costs Should Follow An Acquittal
The Issue
In 2012, the law changed without proper consultation so that defendants acquitted by a court were not allowed to recover their reasonable legal costs.
This injustice happens on a daily basis throughout the land and was perfectly illustrated by the acquittal of an 83-year-old farmer, Kenneth Hugill, a man of good character.
He was found not guilty after just 24-minutes and is now left with a legal bill in excess of £30k. This is grossly unfair. It is not justice and flies in the face of the presumption of innocence.
That is why I am launching this petition.
Please support it to ensure that in the future innocent people like Kenneth Hugill will not face financial ruin!
