To New York State Government & Leaders,

Due to the increased awareness of excessive force by police officers across America, we want to make our voices heard and ensure our communities are safe for all citizens!

We are asking that police, correction officers, government leaders, district attorneys, and prosecutors are held accountable.

We petition for the following to be implemented immediately:

·        Body cams for all officers. They must not be able to shut them off (dispatch remotely should have to approve that), and footage of body and dash cams saved for up to 5 years for evidence purposes in any case.

·        Retraining/Education/Mental Health Services. We are asking that all police and correction officers be retrained on how to de-escalate and handle every citizen they come in contact with. Officers should receive education on mental disorders and more so they recognize people who are not in a “normal” state. Finally, that officers are provided mental health services to ensure they deal with their emotional health to better serve the community.

·        Excessive Force/Justice for Quentin Suttles. We are asking that any officer that uses excessive force, injures someone, or takes a life to immediately be removed from duty and arrested as any other citizen would be. Secondly, a Buffalo NY Police Officer beat Quentin Suttles while on the ground and caused him to have his eye broken in two different places, shoulder blade broken, and his scapula split in half. All while punching him in the face. This is unacceptable and we ask that this officer be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and no longer allowed to be a police officer anywhere.

If I as a citizen shot someone, attempted to kill someone, or hit a police officer I would be charged and immediately be put in jail. So why is it that police can do this to us, the citizens, and not be held to the same standard? The law must be upheld by all! We need changes to happen now! If it is the police department’s job to serve and protect us, they should do that regardless of skin color, economic status, religion, or any other basis. They should have the proper training to handle a situation and deescalate if needed without improper use of weapons or improper use of their bodies. They need to recognize and remember that people have mental illness, medical problems, and economic troubles and treat people with respect and innocence until proven guilty, not guilty until proven innocent. This also goes for our correction officers; they need to be held accountable as well. Just because someone is in a jail or prison does not mean they are to be treated less than human.
