A Senseless Tragedy

Zewdu Haftu, a young woman brimming with life at 32, was abducted and murdered in Mekelle, Tigray's capital, in the face of broad daylight. This brazen act shattered the sense of security for the entire community. Her friend, Semhal Geberezgher, who bravely witnessed the abduction, was then inexplicably taken into police custody. She is free now.

 

 A Cry for Justice in a Climate of Violence

This tragedy exposes the harsh reality of ongoing violence against women in Tigray. The Tigray Interim Regional Administration (T-IRA) has a critical role to play. Upholding the safety and well-being of its citizens, particularly women and girls, is paramount. Furthermore, ensuring a robust system for investigating and prosecuting SGBV crimes is essential to deter future violence and deliver justice to victims.
