Justice For Zeta, the dog killed by Cobb county, GA police officer in front of family
The Issue
On the evening of December 2nd, 2024, the Carr family in Cobb county, Georgia were forced to watch in sheer horror as their much-loved, sweet and non-aggressive dog Zeta was senselessly shot, right through the eye, by a police officer on their property. A traumatic experience especially for the three young children, 10, 9 and 7, who witnessed this horrifying incident. The officers rang the doorbell at the family home as they were investigating a 911 call that had come from the area. The family had just arrived home and therefore had no information and knew nothing about a call. When the family answered the door, the front door latch came loose and Zeta the dog did what any normal dog would do in the situation, barked and went to investigate what was happening with strange people on her property. She was then shot, straight through the eye, before the family could grab her and bring her back inside. Zeta's owners and their children were screaming and crying as the scene unfolded.
We respectfully demand answers, justice and accountability. The incident not only speaks volumes about the officer's capability to handle such situations, but also exposes glaring inadequacies in the training program of the Cobb County Police Department.
We insist that the county department takes immediate steps to fire the errant officer, release the body cam footage to the distraught family and their attorney, and improve the standards of their police training modules. Specifically, officers must be trained to deal better with pets on a property, and the threshold for identifying a dog as an ' imminent threat' should be significantly raised.
While statistics vary, it is clear that instances of police encounters ending with pet fatalities are alarmingly high. We refuse to let these figures increase unchallenged.
We call upon the authorities to do the right thing - take responsibility, ensure justice, and make sure this never happens again. Sign this petition to join us in our fight for justice for Zeta.
