[Over 21,000 Signatures!] Why the Section 84 Acquittal Must Be Challenged Through an Appeal

Thank you to the 21,000+ citizens standing with us. As the appeal deadline approaches, we urge the Attorney-General's Chambers to appeal this decision based on established legal principles:
* Precedents of Criminal Liability: In Malaysian jurisprudence, a medical psychiatric diagnosis does not automatically confer a legal exemption from criminal responsibility. Established precedents demonstrate that individuals with mental health issues can still be found fully guilty of an offense if they possessed cognitive awareness of their actions at the time of the crime.
* Accountability Does Not Deny Treatment: Finding the accused legally guilty does not mean a denial of psychiatric care. The Malaysian justice and correctional system operates under strict administrative and medical protocols to ensure that individuals with mental health needs receive appropriate supervision, medication, and specialized forensic treatment while undergoing lawful detention.
Conclusion:
An appeal is vital to ensure justice for the victim, Yap Shing Xuen, and her family. A formal conviction delivers the necessary punitive justice and legal accountability for murder while fully safeguarding the right to medical care. Furthermore, in judicial and executive practice, securing a royal pardon from a criminal sentence carries a far more stringent threshold and rigour compared to being discharged from a psychiatric facility, thereby ensuring greater long-term public safety.
