The Issue

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the Western Michigan Broncos outplayed, out-hustled, and rightfully defeated the #16 Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium. For four quarters, the Broncos execution was masterful: sophomore kicker Dieter Kelly was flawless, hitting 4-for-4 on field goals, while a relentless defense forced three crucial turnovers against a heavily favored opponent.

With mere seconds left on the clock and the Broncos leading 12-7, Michigan's initial desperation Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete as the game clock hit 0:00. Western Michigan players, coaching staff, and fans rightly began celebrating an iconic, historic upset.

Instead of letting the game end, Big Ten officiating crews stepped in to review the play. In a highly controversial decision, officials claimed a defender touched the ball out-of-bounds with one single second remaining. This gave the Wolverines a second-chance opportunity, which quarterback Bryce Underwood used to find JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard walk-off touchdown—resulting in a fabricated 13-12 victory for Michigan.

As many national sports analysts and fans across the country have expressed, giving Michigan an extra play felt like an inexcusable "home call" that completely stole a career-defining win from a hard-working MAC program. While the Big Ten has stood by the administrative technicality of the review, the spirit of fair play and honest competition was entirely violated on that field.

Western Michigan earned that win. This petition calls on college football governing bodies to investigate the review process and officially recognize the integrity of the game. We demand accountability for the officiating that robbed the Broncos of their legendary moment. Let’s make sure that Western Michigan gets the win they deserve!

Our Core Demands:

Official Investigation: An independent NCAA review into the final seconds of the game clock management and officiating call changes at Michigan Stadium. &
Officiating Accountability: Enhanced scrutiny and performance evaluation for Big Ten officiating crews to ensure unbiased game-ending reviews, especially when officiating games involving their own conference members against mid-major schools. •
Public Recognition: A formal statement from the
NCAA and the CFB Selection Committee acknowledging the controversial nature of the game's termination and validating Western Michigan's exceptional performance. © Reddit •r/CFB

Rhys RomanowskiPetition StarterI’m Rhys Romanowski. I’m not a fan of Western Michigan, I’m a Iowa fan, but I’m advocating for what’s right. Yesterday was the worst. Thanks for the 2 people who stepped up and also did petitions. We need the NCAA to see this and do something. Thanks
