Three year old Unecebo Mboteni tragically passed away after falling into a pit toilet.

These toilets are illegal in school premises under South African laws since 2013, yet many provincial areas have yet to follow and the government is pushing it to happen. He was unsupervised when using these toilets and found 10 minutes after falling in the 3 metre deep pit due to the bubbling being caused. These toilets (if you can call them that) are unhygienic, unsafe, and illegal. Although he was rushed to the hospital he tragically died the next day, April 19th 2024. Unecebo's family don't know the full story and no one is helping them. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) and his preschool, Little Champions Day Care in Mdantsane Eastern Cape South Africa have failed to take action or take accountability for what happened. Not only was this illegal, but no one was with him, there has been a lack of communication, and it might take years for Unecebo's case to be thoroughly investigated. The worst part is this is not the first time it happened in the area, there were two prior deaths (one in 2018 and one in 2023) that happened in the same Eastern Cape area.
