On August 9, 2025, my 16-year-old daughter, Traelynn Sibley, was visiting a friend’s house in Kansas City when gunfire from outside struck her. A night with friends ended in tragedy.

Traelynn’s death marked the 100th homicide in Kansas City this year, and she is one of eight victims under 18. This violence is tearing families apart.

Children should not live in fear. Parents should not have to bury their kids. Communities deserve real protection.

We demand urgent action from Kansas City leaders to:

Increase police patrols and visibility in neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.

Launch gun buyback programs and strictly enforce laws against illegal firearms.

Enact stronger safe storage legislation to keep guns out of kids’ hands.

Invest in community and school programs that give youth alternatives to violence.
