Why this petition matters

Started by Rachelle Henry

I recorded this video footage from my home address in Lewisham on Friday 15th July 2022. The footage shows a sergeant punching a young man with his fist numerous times. The second footage shows the same sergeant openly admitting to ‘punching him as hard as he could’.

Please see the full video on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/1239990622/posts/pfbid0XjBTXPFVFUrvEnTWZeQn4fVDRn4iTSNxRXT5AfryhtsKhpaaUtaeSCwxQS6CgEGrl/?app=fbl

What I saw was disgusting and horrifying to witness. The Metropolitan Police were declared institutionally racist over 20 years ago, and witnessing incidents like this seems to show that nothing has changed. This behaviour is unacceptable and is a matter that needs investigating, as would any other report of assault if it was a member of the public. This officer should also be removed from his duties with immediate effect.

I always trusted the police, but after witnessing this, I don’t anymore.

The police are supposed to work to serve and protect us, not abuse their powers. This has had a detrimental effect for many included. The victim (as well as his family and friends), the witnesses and the greater public.

Public trust in the Met police is at an all time low, and incidents like this only make it worse.

What makes this offence worse for me is that I think this attack was racially motivated - there were two men at the scene and the other man was treated completely differently. I myself, as a Black person, was also treated horribly by this man of authority. What happened to compassion within our police officers?

Please sign my petition to help get answers from Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and Mayor Sadiq Khan.
