For nearly six years, women and girls in Afghanistan have endured one of the most devastating assaults on human rights in the world. They have been systematically stripped of their rights to education, employment, freedom of movement, public participation, and personal autonomy. What was once a struggle for equality has become a fight for survival.

Millions of women and girls are being denied the most basic freedoms simply because they are female. Girls are barred from secondary schools and universities. Women have been pushed out of workplaces, excluded from public life, and subjected to increasingly severe restrictions that affect every aspect of their daily existence.

Behind these policies are real human lives. Young women have seen their dreams shattered, their futures stolen, and their voices silenced. Many face isolation, hopelessness, forced dependency, and severe psychological distress. Families are being torn apart, and an entire generation of girls is growing up without access to the education and opportunities that are their fundamental human rights.

The world has watched this crisis unfold, yet meaningful action has fallen far short of what is required. Silence in the face of such widespread discrimination and oppression only deepens the suffering of those affected.

Australia has long stood as a defender of human rights, democracy, and gender equality. We call on the Australian Government to take stronger action by working with international partners to increase diplomatic pressure, support accountability for human rights violations, expand humanitarian assistance, and invest in education, safety, and opportunities for women and girls in Afghanistan.

We also call on the United Nations to officially establish UN Women Afghanistan as a dedicated and recognised entity representing the women of Afghanistan. Afghan women deserve more than to have others speak on their behalf—they deserve a direct, permanent, and internationally recognised platform through which their voices, experiences, and priorities are heard.

A recognised UN Women Afghanistan would strengthen international advocacy, ensure the lived experiences of women inside Afghanistan are represented in global decision-making, improve coordination of humanitarian and gender equality initiatives, amplify the voices of Afghan women leaders and activists, and help ensure that policies affecting their lives are informed by those who know their reality best. No one can represent the struggles, resilience, and aspirations of the women of Afghanistan better than the women of Afghanistan themselves.

The women and girls of Afghanistan do not need sympathy alone—they need action. They need the international community to stand beside them and defend their right to learn, work, speak, participate in society, and live with dignity. They also deserve an independent and internationally recognised voice within the United Nations so they can advocate directly for their rights and help shape the decisions that affect their future.
