Justice for the Puppy Found in a Trash Bag

Justice for the Puppy Found in a Trash Bag
The Issue
A puppy was found barely alive in a trash bag on the side of Morgan Road in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Suffocating and in pain, he was left to die like garbage.
Thanks to the quick actions of a good Samaritan and the nonprofit All Species Kinship, he was rescued — and now he’s slowly recovering. But this story should not end with recovery. It must lead to justice.
This was not an accident. It was an act of cruelty — and it demands accountability.
Under Michigan law, extreme animal cruelty can carry felony charges. Yet too often, these cases are treated as low-level offenses. The result? Abusers walk free while animals suffer. This puppy’s story, heartbreaking as it is, is just one of hundreds like it. In 2023 alone, Michigan State Police reported more than 900 incidents of animal cruelty — a shocking rise from just 123 in 2017.
If we don’t take these cases seriously, they will continue to happen.
We are calling on the Battle Creek Police Department, the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office, and Michigan lawmakers to:
- Investigate and charge the person(s) responsible for this act under the full extent of the law
- Ensure that felony charges are pursued when justified by the severity of the abuse
- Publicly affirm their commitment to treating animal cruelty as a serious crime
This puppy may never fully recover from what was done to him — but we can make sure the people responsible are held accountable. We can send a clear message that this community does not tolerate cruelty.
Sign this petition if you believe animals deserve protection, justice, and compassion — not to be thrown away.
