Justice for the Harborside: NYS Dept. of Health Forcing 181 Seniors into Homelessness

Justice for the Harborside: NYS Dept. of Health Forcing 181 Seniors into Homelessness
The Issue
To: The New York State Department of Health, Governor of New York, and All Concerned Officials
We, the residents, families, and supporters of The Amsterdam at Harborside (Harborside), a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Port Washington, New York, urgently call upon the New York State Department of Health to reconsider its recent decision denying the sale of Harborside to Life Care Services (LCS). This ruling threatens to displace over 180 elderly residents, many of whom have invested their life savings in this community and now face the devastating prospect of losing their homes.
One of those residents is my 87-year-old grandmother. She sold her home and invested her entire life savings into Harborside, trusting that it would provide her with a stable and secure future. Now, because of this decision, she is facing the unimaginable reality of being left homeless in her most vulnerable years. After working hard her entire life to save and plan for her retirement, she, like many other residents, deserves the peace and security that Harborside promised.
Harborside has provided its residents with quality care, comfort, and stability for years, but the ongoing financial struggles and bankruptcy have left the future of this community uncertain. Life Care Services, a respected leader in senior living, has agreed to acquire Harborside and ensure the continued care and security of its residents. However, the Department of Health's ruling has halted this vital sale, placing the lives and well-being of seniors at serious risk.
We demand that the New York State Department of Health revisit this decision and approve the sale of Harborside to LCS. This solution will protect the residents’ homes, preserve their financial investments, and provide a pathway for Harborside to regain financial stability under new, capable management.
Time is running out, and the residents cannot afford further delays. Please help us safeguard the futures of our loved ones, like my grandmother, and the seniors who call Harborside home.
Sign this petition to urge the New York State Department of Health and Governor to allow this sale to proceed and ensure that Harborside's residents are not left homeless.
