Justice for the 700+ Dogs: Hold Miranda’s Rescue Owner Shannon Miranda Accountable
Justice for the 700+ Dogs: Hold Miranda’s Rescue Owner Shannon Miranda Accountable
The Issue
We, the undersigned, demand immediate justice for the hundreds of dogs who suffered and died at Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna, Humboldt County, California.
Excavations on the property have uncovered multiple dog remains in various stages of decomposition, including animals with gunshot wounds. Over 700 dogs transferred to the rescue since January 2025 remain unaccounted for, with only a small fraction confirmed adopted.
Investigators from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and other agencies are examining allegations that this “no-kill” rescue accepted dogs and substantial funding from shelters across California (including Bay Area shelters) under the promise of care and rehoming — only for many dogs to allegedly be killed and buried on the property to free up space for more incoming animals and payments.
Neighbors and investigators have described horrifying scenes of mass graves and decomposing remains. The rescue remains open while the investigation continues, raising serious concerns for any animals still there.
This is systemic animal cruelty and alleged fraud that has caused unimaginable suffering.
We demand:
Swift filing of felony animal cruelty, fraud, conspiracy, and any other applicable charges against owner Shannon Miranda and any involved staff.
A complete, transparent investigation into all funding received and the fate of every missing dog.
Immediate closure of Miranda’s Rescue and transfer of any remaining animals to verified, reputable shelters.
Stronger oversight and accountability for animal rescues that receive public and shelter funding.
Maximum penalties under California law — those responsible must be held behind bars.
The animals cannot speak for themselves. Sign this petition to urge the Humboldt County District Attorney, California Attorney General, and federal authorities to act decisively and deliver justice.
No more delays. No more excuses. Justice now for these innocent dogs.
