The Issue

As a student in Alberta, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges our teachers face. Increasing class sizes and diminishing resources severely impact our education. Teachers are the backbone of our future, and they deserve better. However, the Back to Work Legislation, currently backed by a notwithstanding clause, undermines their rights, leaving unable to protest. This makes it incredibly difficult for them to ensure the quality education that every student deserves.

The current legislation enables the government to override teachers' rights, prioritizing legislation over meaningful negotiation. This is not only detrimental to the teaching profession but also to students like me who rely on committed and well-supported teachers. While other regions foster collaboration and ensure that teachers' voices are heard and respected, Alberta lags, impacting the educational outcomes and well-being of its students.

One actionable approach would be to re-evaluate the conditions surrounding teachers' wages. Presently, many teachers in Alberta earn below the national average, making it challenging to attract and retain qualified professionals. By aligning their salaries with the national average, we not only honor their dedication but also ensure that Alberta can compete nationally for top talent. However, fixing teachers' pay is only part of the solution.

Addressing class sizes and inadequate support systems is equally crucial. Enforcing a cap on the number of students per class would allow teachers to provide more individualized attention, enhancing their capacity to nurture and develop each student's potential. Increased support, both in terms of resources and personnel, will empower teachers to do their job more effectively, directly benefiting us, the students. Investing in sustainable long-term partnerships between the Alberta Department of Education and teachers’ unions would enrich the overall educational landscape for generations to come.

Please join me in calling on the Alberta government to abolish the Back to Work Legislation, increase teachers' salaries to at least the national average, establish class size limits, and enhance support for teachers.
