Petition Overview:

On September 24, 2022, our beloved Steven Paul Colon tragically lost his life in Osprey, Florida, at the hands of David Ross Gregory. Despite clear evidence that Mr. Gregory was illegally carrying a firearm without the necessary license, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) granted him immunity under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. This application directly contradicts Florida Statute 776.041(1), which states that individuals engaged in unlawful activities are precluded from claiming self-defense under such provisions.

The State Attorney’s Office has deferred responsibility, indicating that the decision to press charges lies with the SCSO. This abdication of duty denies justice for Steven and sets a dangerous precedent where unlawful actions are overlooked, and accountability is dismissed.

We Demand:

 1. Immediate Re-evaluation: The SCSO must re-examine the circumstances surrounding Steven’s death, considering the illegal possession of the firearm by Mr. Gregory.

 2. Independent Oversight: The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) should conduct an impartial investigation into the SCSO’s handling of this case to ensure transparency and justice.

 3. Legal Action: Appropriate criminal charges should be filed against David Ross Gregory for the unlawful possession and use of a firearm, leading to Steven’s untimely death.

Why This Matters:

Granting immunity under “Stand Your Ground” to individuals who are actively violating firearm laws undermines the integrity of our legal system and endangers our community. Steven’s family deserves justice, and the community deserves assurance that laws will be applied fairly and correctly.
