🐾 JUSTICE FOR SKY

PROTECT EVERY ANIMAL IN SAPS CARE

Sky was a SAPS service dog.

She served the people of South Africa.

She trusted the people responsible for her care.

And she died while in SAPS custody.

Sky’s death has shocked animal lovers across South Africa. But this petition is not only about Sky.

It is about every dog and every horse currently in the care of SAPS.

Animals cannot tell us when they are frightened.

They cannot tell us when they are suffering.

They cannot ask to be removed from an environment that is harming them.

They depend completely on the humans responsible for their welfare.

WE CANNOT WAIT FOR ANOTHER SKY.

We recognise that the investigations surrounding Sky’s death must be allowed to proceed independently and that nobody should be presumed guilty before the evidence has been considered.

But those investigations do not answer the urgent question:

WHO IS PROTECTING THE ANIMALS THAT REMAIN IN SAPS CARE TODAY?

We are calling on Parliament and the South African Government to act.

WE DEMAND:

🐾 Independent inspections of every SAPS facility housing dogs and horses.

🐾 Independent veterinary and behavioural assessments of every SAPS service animal.

🐾 Immediate removal of animals at risk and placement in appropriate independent places of safety.

🐾 Independent oversight of all animals in SAPS custody.

🐾 Investigation of serious injuries, deaths and welfare incidents involving SAPS animals.

🐾 Preservation of evidence relating to Sky’s death and other serious animal-welfare incidents.

🐾 A complete independent review of SAPS K-9 and Mounted Units.

🐾 Suspension or closure of units that cannot meet acceptable animal-welfare standards.

🐾 Enforceable national welfare standards for every animal used or held by the South African State.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT BLAMING EVERY SAPS HANDLER.

There are handlers who love their animals deeply and who dedicate themselves to their care.

This is about systems, accountability and protection.

If the State takes responsibility for an animal, the State must take responsibility for that animal’s welfare.

NO ANIMAL SHOULD SUFFER BECAUSE IT CANNOT SPEAK.

Sky cannot speak for herself.

We can speak for her.

And we can speak for every dog and horse still depending on the State to protect them.
