Justice for Sheba & Bay of Islands Animal Rescue!
The issue
Sheba was hit by a vehicle a few years ago and has been living painfully & limping ever since.
Summer from Bay Of Islands Animal Rescue is prepared to go to jail before handing Sheba back to her “owners”.
“Ill treatment or neglect of animals is a crime” According to the Animal Welfare Act 1999.
Sheba’s owners were not following their duty of care. They did not give Sheba the recommended veterinary care, so she has since been limping and scraping her leg on the ground for years causing raw, open wounds.
Summer is putting her life on the line and also the hundreds, Thousands of other animals she and her incredible team of VOLUNTEERScould help but instead she might be behind bars for making sure that this animal was treated the way the Act specifies as the minimum care animals should have.
The Act sets out the obligations of animal owners or people in charge of animals. They have to meet an animal's physical, health, and behavioural needs, and must alleviate pain or distress.
The Act defines 'physical, health, and behavioural needs' as:
proper and sufficient food and water
adequate shelter
the opportunity to display normal patterns of behaviour
appropriate physical handling
protection from, and rapid diagnosis of, injury and disease.
We need our countries law enforcement to approach animal abuse cases with realistic outcomes. Summer is not the criminal here. Summer is the one human looking after Sheba and so many other animals in her care are getting food, shelter and love. Something Sheba owners could not give her. This is why this case and others like it in the country need to be investigated. But investigate the OWNERS not the RESCUES.
More funding needs to be allocated to small charities not just the SPCA. As charities like BOIAR do so much good for the community. A community full of horrific stories of animals abuse, from dumped puppies to dog fighting rings! This HAS to stop in New Zealand.
The Government needs to DO MORE for the animal welfare of this country! Every rescue in the country is currently drowning trying to keep going!
We, the people of New Zealand, need to make a stand now. Let’s stand with Summer. Let’s stand for Sheba!
