An Open Letter to Suffolk County Executive-Elect, Ed Romaine

Sir,

I am writing to you today to implore that your administration not only prioritize the Gilgo Beach investigation and maintain the integrity of the Taskforce, that you appoint a talented and respected Police Commissioner that can lead the investigative process all the way through to additional charges, but that you and your teams acknowledge the suffering of the families of the victims along Ocean Parkway, and the long delayed Justice and respect due to them.

For far too long the families have dealt with delay, malfeasance, dereliction of duty and corruption. What began under your predecessor’s tenure, is now yours to complete, yours to achieve. Please commit your dedication to the families of Karen Vergata, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Valerie Mack Jessica Taylor, Shannan Gilbert and the Unidentified Persons known only to us as Peaches, her daughter Toddler, and Asian Doe.

Please commit your administration to bringing Justice for Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack, victims since 2000 and 2003 respectively. Extend olive branches to these families and offer assurances that their lost loved ones will get the justice long detoured, long delayed.

Ensure that your Police Commissioner and their team will re-explore the death of Shannan Gilbert with the fresh new set of eyes that ushered in the reinvigoration that led to the arrest of Rex Heuermann. The circumstances surrounding Shannan Gilbert’s death warrant a qualitative and comprehensive reexamination. The myriad personalities involved or thought to be involved need to be explored with modern insight and attentiveness.

It is said that the wheels of Justice grind slow, but fine; it is time to give these victims and their devastated families the confidence in you and your new administration to bring them that Justice.

In closing, allow this righteous pursuit of Justice to be your legacy during your leadership tenure as Suffolk County Executive.
